I run a private practice, which means that the costs for the counseling and therapy sessions I offer are generally not covered by German public health insurance plans.
Some private health insurers reimburse you for the costs of therapy sessions that fall under the Heilpraktikergesetz (Alternative Practitioner Law). Please check with your insurance provider.
Unless you book a multi-session package, you pay your fee by the end of each session, be it with cash or card or using PayPal.

Why choose to pay yourself?
There can be several advantages for you if you decide to pay for psychotherapy yourself:
Urgency: In general, as a self-payer, you will receive a therapy slot immediately or very soon, as you do not have to wait for an assessment for the approval of cost reimbursement by the statutory health insurance.
Free choice of methods: You have access to significantly more methods for psychotherapeutic treatment than those covered by statutory health insurance. I will discuss with you the effectiveness of a method concerning the disorder to be treated before starting therapy.
You have the freedom to choose the duration of each therapy session, which does not have to be limited to 50 minutes but can also last 75 or 90 minutes, as well as the number and frequency of therapy sessions. You alone determine how long the therapy lasts and how intensive it should be.
Discretion: If the therapy is self-paid, neither the health insurance nor anyone else will know about it. There is no diagnosis recorded with an insurance company. This can have advantages when taking out other insurance policies.
In Germany, the costs for self-paid treatments can be tax-deductable being extraordinary expenses.
